September 06 Screencast demos on Avalon/XAMLTim Sneath, a Microsoft technical evangelist just posted couple of Screencast videos (more are coming!) on Avalon and usage of XAML. Don't miss the 12-line RSS blog reader! Also, the XAML introduction is really cool!
Channel9 is posting some great videos on Avalon (Checkout the heatlhcare demo - it made me go OOOOOHHH this is way cool!!!)
I had mentioned about a "hello world" program - Avalon style, in my earlier blog entry... I got caught up with some product related work (working on converting our existing codebase from VS 6.0 to VS 2005 and compiling it under the .NET CLR, the fun stuff). But that Avalon "hello world" demo is coming soon! Till then enjoy these great screencasts and demos.
August 31 Installing WinFS Beta 1 on Vista Beta 1I played around with the (great) samples provided in the SDK. Also after watching the Channel 9 Video (you should really see it!!) I understood a little more on the new release of WinFS.
Unfortunately I could only play with WinFS on my XP machine. The support for Win2k3 and Vista Beta 1 is not in this release, but knowing how WinFS is really targetted for Vista (backported to XP and Win2k3 by the final RTM), there is an easy way around this installation problem.
If you tried to install the WinFS Beta 1 MSI on Vista, you'll get a error saying the OS is not supported. If you have Platform Installer SDK or Orca (Wise would work too), you can follow few simple modifications to the MSI:
(Before I post this, thanks to the WinFS newsgroup for posting this info - http://msdn.microsoft.com/newsgroups/default.aspx?dg=microsoft.public.windows.developer.winfx.winfs&lang=en&cr=US)
Using Orca (which is what I did) - open up the winfs.msi in orca and jump to the "LaunchCondition" table. Modify the OS related key and make the version >= 500 and remove the service pack condition.
Or if you want to use one of the SDK tools, (From the WinFS newsgroup)
"If you've the Windows Installer SDK installed, export the LaunchCondition
table using Msidb.exe, edit the OS check in it, and then import it back into the MSI. It'll install then. I'm not sure if these issues are related to Windows 2003 or having me just start the services manually without rebooting, but that's what happens here: - File promotion doesn't seem to work. - Files copied into the store go corrupt." The problems mentioned above by the user were gone after he/she did the reboot. Once you make the changes by using either msidb.ede or orca.exe, start the install and make sure to reboot after the installation is done.
That's it - Visual Studio integration was added so now you can use WinFS inside of VS. Also, be sure to try out of WinFS SDk using Avalon - what a great combination - the searching/organization power of WinFS and presentation power of Avalon!!
PS: Check out the video @ channel9 and the WinFS SDK samples in your WinFS installation directory.
August 29 WinFS Beta 1 is live on MSDN!Well this is just crazy (in a nice way)... We have a our first look at WinFS in the form of Beta 1 release on MSDN. Supposed to be going live tonight, but "someone" pushed it out early.
There's not much info on this release right now, but Channel9 is soon going to post a (exclusive) demo of WinFS and has links to the team's blog.
(Also look at their main page - http://channel9.msdn.com/ for more details on this release).
I've currently installed this on Win XP SP2 (VS 2005 Beta 2 is a requirement). There's not much help available, but keep looking at MSDN and Channel9 (and WinFS team blog) for more details.
Hoping for a "suprize!" vista build :-) August 28 Another try at blogging ...Okay, let's start again...
Well, that I-am-a-new-blogger post didn’t start off well. After a few weeks I am posting again - and this time hoping to be regular. I've been busy working at a project (company where I work); we are couple of weeks away from shipping this product!
I've also been playing around with Avalon/XAML on my XP machine (laptop). Last weekend I decided to go crazy and install Vista Beta 1 on my laptop's second partition. The experience has been much better than what I got from the VPC.
There are not many resources on Avalon/XAML, but whatever there is currently; there is lot of examples and basics to get one started on this new programming model. Below or some of the blogs and website I frequently visit (okay, at least twice a day):
Blogs:

WinFX SDK library - http://winfx.msdn.microsoft.com/library/ Other websites in general:
Channel9 (Great videos, sneak previews, discussions) - http://channel9.msdn.com Longhorn Corner - http://www.longhorncorner.com/ MSDN Avalon Newsgroup - http://msdn.microsoft.com/newsgroups/default.aspx?dg=microsoft.public.windows.developer.winfx.avalon&lang=en&cr=US XAMLShare (Avalon/XAML Code/Samples/Controls Wiki) - http://xamlshare.com I'll update this list with any new blogs or websites I find. I've found Channel9 to be a great place for any new announcements (Microsoft in general, including Vista and Avalon), WinFX demos, and user code samples in general. Also the Microsoft newsgroup link will take you to other WinFX / Avalon newsgroup on the site. A lot of developers and program managers from the WinFX and Vista teams frequent those newsgroups and answer questions and post any new announcements. Next post I'll start on how to setup development environments on both Windows XP SP2 and Windows Vista...and also how to write a simple Hello World program - the Avalon way!
May 31 Welcome to the Geek World (to myself)! My first official blog entry! I feel part of the Geek world!! I'll start off by listing some of my fav. websites/blogs. These sites are pretty much where I spend my 'surfing' time -
7 is a lucky number to end :) Hopefully we'll soon have a real blog entry. (Damn! almost ended this one with the usual email signoff!)
